Brief
This article details the design, simulation, fabrication, and testing of a fused-tapered few-mode fiber coupler, specifically an SMF-Six-MF coupler, to efficiently generate first-order orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes for applications in optical communication and fiber lasers.
Summary
This article presents the design, simulation, and experimental testing of fused-tapered fiber couplers made from single-mode fiber (SMF) and six-mode fiber (Six-MF) to generate orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes. The authors designed three types of couplers (LP0,1-LP1,1, LP0,1-LP2,1, and LP0,1-LP3,1) through numerical simulation based on coupled mode theory and beam propagation method, achieving over 99% coupling efficiency in simulations. They then fabricated and tested an LP0,1-LP1,1 coupler using the fused taper pulling method, achieving OAM mode generation with a measured coupling efficiency of 61.38%, insertion loss of 2.12 dB, and a splitting ratio of 88.56% at a wavelength of 1550 nm. This work demonstrates a feasible method for generating OAM modes in optical fibers for applications in optical communication and fiber lasers.
