Numerical Aperture (N.A)
What is Numerical Aperture
Numerical Aperture, N,A is a parameter that measures the light receiving ability of an optical system , commonly used in:
- Microscope objective
- Optical fiber
- Lenses
Put simply: The larger the N.A, the more oblique and wider angle light the optical system can "capture".
Definition of Numerical Aperture

Numerical Aperture in Fiber Optics

- Rays that undergo total internal reflection within the core get transmitted along the fiber.
- Light that doesn’t meet the total internal reflection condition gets reflected out of the core.
